Negative space is the quiet area around your subject — the part of the frame that holds nothing, yet does the most work. Used well, emptiness amplifies presence and gives the subject room to breathe. Used poorly, it is just wasted frame. This challenge asks you to make the emptiness do the heavy lifting.

The subject should feel small and contained within a dominant field of quieter space (sky, wall, water, shadow, fog, paper, etc.). The empty area must read as compositionally active — shaping the subject, not surrounding it by accident.

A lone cyclist in the lower-right quadrant of a wide frame, surrounded by an expanse of fog-grey road and soft sky. The emptiness has tonal structure — gradient, atmosphere, a suggestion of texture. The cyclist is unmistakably the subject despite occupying a small share of the frame, and removing any of the surrounding space would weaken the image.
