Visual weight is how hard a single element pulls at the eye (its mass in the frame's gravity) and balance is what a photograph does with those pulls once they can be read. Every shape in a frame carries weight, and the frame behaves like a scale: load too much mass on one side and it tips, and the viewer feels the lean even when they cannot name it. A tipped frame is not wrong the way a missed focus is wrong; it is uneasy the way a crooked shelf is uneasy: the eye keeps correcting for it instead of resting in it.
The trap is thinking weight means brightness. Brightness is one lever of several, and the narrowest one: the tonal-hierarchy lesson owns that cut, luminance ranking who wins the first look. Visual weight is the wider ledger: size, tone, color, contrast, sharpness, the gravity of a human face, and where a thing sits in the rectangle all add or subtract mass, and they trade against each other constantly. A red button the size of a coin can out-weigh half a grey wall; a single eye can hold down a whole empty frame. Where composition asks what route the eye travels, visual weight asks the blunter question underneath it: does the frame sit level, and is each element exactly as heavy as it was meant to be?

A 6 has the elements; it has not weighed them. Two things go wrong, and they look like opposites. Either the frame is a democracy (subject, background object, and foreground incident all carrying the same mass, so nothing dominates and the eye has no anchor to settle on) or the frame is lopsided: a bright corner, a saturated scrap at a border, a second face in the background is quietly heavier than the subject, and the whole picture leans toward it. The tell is physical. Cover the subject with a thumb: the frame should feel like it just lost its centre of gravity. In a 6 it barely changes, because the weight was never on the subject to begin with.
An 8 is weighed on purpose. One element is unmistakably the heaviest (the subject holds the mass) and everything else is distributed so the frame settles: a small heavy accent on one side answered by a larger quiet mass on the other, the empty space itself pulling its share of the load. It can balance symmetrically for stillness or asymmetrically for energy, but either way the equilibrium reads as a decision. A judge feels it before measuring anything, the way a crooked picture on a wall is felt from across the room, and feels the opposite just as fast: a frame that sits level, or leans exactly as far as it meant to, reads as built rather than found. The 6 arranged the elements; the 8 balanced their weights.

Read the frame the way you would read a loaded scale: look for where the mass sits, not for what is brightest. Squint until the scene collapses into masses (the same squint the composition and tonal lessons use, asked a third way): now ignore the ranking and feel the distribution. Is the heavy half the half you meant? Hold a finger up as a fulcrum at the frame's centre and ask which way it tips. If you can answer, you can already balance; most frames tip without their maker ever asking.
Then run the levers, because weight is a sum and any one of them can dominate. Size: bigger is heavier, but only up to a point (a large soft grey mass loses to a small hard one). Tone: bright pulls, and so does an isolated dark shape on a light field (weight is about difference from the surround, not brightness alone). Colour: warm and saturated is heavy, and red is the heavyweight of the wheel (a thumbnail-sized red scrap will out-pull a quarter of the frame). Contrast and sharpness: a crisp, high-contrast patch is heavier than a soft, low-contrast one of the same size, which is why a sharp subject on soft ground weighs correctly and a soft subject in front of a sharp background inverts the scale. And the lever that overrules the rest: human gravity. A face, an eye, a hand, a line of text, a gaze all read as heavy regardless of size or tone, because the eye is wired to hunt for them; a stranger walking small in the far background can quietly outweigh the foreground subject, and a second pair of eyes anywhere in the frame is a rival centre of mass.
Placement comes last, because the same element weighs differently depending on where it sits. Like a child on a see-saw, an element near an edge exerts more leverage than one near the centre: a small object in a corner tugs harder than its size suggests, which is how one bright edge-scrap tips an otherwise balanced frame. Higher in the frame reads heavier than low; isolated reads heavier than clustered. Patrol the corners specifically: they are the longest lever arms in the rectangle, and the most common place a picture springs a leak of weight it never budgeted for.

A frame is balanced the way a boat is loaded: by moving weight around until it sits level, and most of that is done with your feet. If a background element is heavier than the subject, the cheapest fix is a step: move so it leaves the frame or falls behind something (a stranger's face in the corner, a bright doorway, a saturated sign all vanish with one pace sideways). If the subject itself is too light to hold the frame, get closer or lower so it grows. Size is the bluntest weight lever there is, and it is free.
Then balance what remains. Asymmetry is usually stronger than dead symmetry: place the heavy subject off-centre and answer it with something small across the frame (a lone bird, a spot of warm light, a figure in the distance) using the long lever arm of the far side, where a little mass balances a lot. Negative space is not empty; it is a counterweight, and a large quiet area genuinely balances a small dense subject: that is the physics underneath the negative-space lesson's breathing room. Let the light change the ledger too: a background thrown into shadow, or into soft focus, gets lighter (an out-of-focus mass weighs less than a sharp one, so opening the aperture is as much a balancing tool as a separation one). And when the frame needs one more element to settle, wait for it: the passer-by who will step into the gap on the right, the gull that will drift into the empty upper corner. The decisive moment for weight is the instant the scale comes level.

Post is real weight management, inside real limits. Crop is the biggest lever: it moves the fulcrum, trims a heavy scrap off the long lever arm of an edge, or tightens onto the subject so it reclaims the mass; a crop is a second balancing pass as much as a second composition. Dodge and burn shift tonal weight directly: burn down the bright corner that is tipping the frame, lift the subject a touch, and the scale re-levels without moving a pixel (the method belongs to the dodge-and-burn lesson); here it is a balancing tool, not a ranking one. A too-heavy color accent, the classic red scrap in the background, can be desaturated or darkened until it stops out-weighing the subject, and a small hard distraction can be cloned out to remove its mass from the ledger entirely, though in documentary and nature-competition work that clone is off the table; demote with tone instead.
The honesty clause: post can subtract weight and nudge it; it cannot move the subject, and it cannot invent a counterweight that was never in the frame. If the only heavy thing sits jammed against one edge with nothing to answer it, no slider builds the balancing element on the far side: that is a step that was not taken. A face holds its pull for as long as it reads as a face: burn it down and the eye still finds it, and the darkness deep enough to erase it leaves an obvious hole where a face used to be, so a rival face in the background is a reshoot, not an edit. And a subject that photographed too light (small, soft, tonally merged with its surround) has no mass for a crop or a curve to redistribute. When the imbalance was fixed at the shutter (the position, the missing counterweight, the rival left standing in the frame), the frame is capture-limited, and the honest fix costs nothing and cannot be bought in software: your feet and your patience, next time.

- Beginner: takes the scene's weights as given. Subject centred by reflex; the distribution is whatever the scene handed over, and an unnoticed bright or red element in the background routinely out-weighs the subject.
- Competent: catches gross imbalance after the fact. The lopsided frame or the heavy edge-scrap gets spotted in review and cropped or burned back, but the work runs on one lever, usually tone, and the others go unread.
- Strong (the serious amateur's working level): weighs before the shutter. Weight read as a sum (size, color, sharpness, human gravity, not brightness alone) and balanced asymmetrically: an off-centre subject answered by a small distant counterweight, negative space carrying real mass.
- Advanced: plays the scale as an instrument. Weight distributed to build stillness or deliberate tension, the long lever arms of the edges exploited on purpose, a single eye or a scrap of red used as the precision weight it is, and the frame tipped knowingly when the subject demands unease.

Pick one subject you can place deliberately (a person who will stand where you point, a mug, a single bold object) and one background with room to work: some empty space, an edge or a corner, and one spot where a second element (a lamp, a doorway, a splash of color, another person) can appear or vanish. Keep the subject and the light fixed. Shoot it six ways, changing only the balance:
(1) subject dead-centre, nothing else: the null frame; (2) subject pushed hard to one side, the other side left empty: deliberately tipped; (3) that same off-centre subject, now answered by a small counterweight far across the frame: a distant figure, a warm accent, an object in the opposite corner; (4) a heavier rival (a bright patch, a red object, a second face) sitting in the background out-weighing the subject; (5) the same rival, thrown into shadow or soft focus so it lightens; (6) your best balanced frame, symmetrical or asymmetrical, chosen on purpose.
Import all six. For each, run the thumb test (cover the subject and feel whether the frame loses its centre of gravity) and the tip test: squint, find the fulcrum, name which way it leans. Watch frame 4 tip toward the rival even though the subject is bigger, and watch frame 5 come level the moment the rival lightened: that is the whole lesson in two frames (weight is a budget spent across every lever, not brightness alone).
Then run it as an experiment, not a victory lap: re-critique your one best-balanced frame. Visual weight is one lever inside composition, and composition is the bottleneck that sent you to this page, so the prediction is falsifiable. If balancing the frame's masses was the real fix, the next critique should name a different limit and the FinalFrame Score should move with it. If composition is named again, that is information rather than indictment: either the balance you built is real but quieter than one scene can prove, or the imbalance the critique is reading lives in the eye-path itself (the route, not the weights) which is eye-flow's ground, one lesson over, not this one. Either reading was worth the six frames.
