How to photograph the aurora
Aurora shots fail in two opposite directions: curtains smeared into structureless green fog, or a sky so starved of light the display drowns in noise. The tension is that the aurora moves: this is not the fixed sky that tolerates star-trail patience. The structure lives in ribbons and rays that shift by the second, and every second of shutter averages them further toward fog, so the exposure is squeezed from both ends: short enough to hold the curtain's shape, long enough to feed the sensor. The balance is paid for with a wide aperture and real gain, which makes noise the working tax of the picture, and the noise and grain lesson's distinction the working knowledge: noise is livable and treatable; smeared structure is neither. When the display accelerates, shorten the shutter and take the ISO hit. Structure first, cleanliness second.
Safety
Aurora nights are deep-cold nights, and the cold shortens everything: batteries die early (carry spares in a warm inner pocket and swap as they fade, not when they quit) and dress for standing still for hours, which is a different cold than walking. Coming back inside, let the camera acclimatize sealed in its bag; a cold lens meeting warm air fogs from the inside, and that condensation outlives the evening.
Starting points
- Aperture
- Wide open, or one step down if the lens renders badly there. Every stop here is shutter or ISO you don't have to spend.
- Shutter
- 5–10 s to start; 1–4 s when the display dances, 15–20 s when it fades to a glow. Read the structure between frames and keep adjusting.
- ISO
- 1600–6400. High gain is the honest price of held structure: noise reduction exists, de-smearing does not.
- Focus
- Manual at infinity: magnify a bright star in live view, focus until it is a point, then leave the ring.
- White balance
- Fixed, around 3500–4500 K. Auto drifts frame to frame and repaints the greens each time.
- File
- RAW. The shadows will need lifting and the noise will need treating: both want the whole file.
In the field
- Choose a dark site facing the pole, and check the moon before the drive: moonlight flattens a faint display.
- Anchor the frame with land: a ridge, a tree line, a shoreline. Sky alone has no scale.
- Set focus on a bright star at maximum magnification before the display peaks.
- Re-read the shutter every few minutes; the display's speed decides it, not the table.
- Judge exposure on the histogram, not the screen: a live view at night flatters a frame that is actually starving.
When it fails
- Green fog where curtains were
- Shutter too long for the display's speed. Shorten it and raise the ISO to pay for it: the structure is what the picture is of, and no editing step re-draws ribbons a long exposure averaged away.
- Shadows breaking into color blotches
- Chroma noise from light starvation. Open the aperture fully, lengthen the shutter when the display slows, and expose generously at capture rather than rescuing in post: a lifted underexposure is exactly where the blotches live.
- Foreground reduced to a black cutout
- The land holds almost no light while the sky glows: one file cannot span both. Either use the silhouette deliberately, choosing a ridge line worth reading as pure shape, or expose a separate longer frame for the land while the tripod holds, and be plain about the blend wherever honesty rules apply.
