What's wrong with my photo? Thirteen symptoms, diagnosed

Photographs fail in symptoms (a flat frame, a soft eye, a sky gone white) but the causes live under different names: contrast, focus, dynamic range. This index bridges the two vocabularies. Why do my photos look flat?

Flat is one of two different faults, and they take different fixes. Most often the tonal spread was never set (no true black, no clean bright) and anchoring the black and white points hands the frame its structure back. But if the light itself was flat (overcast, open shade), the spread was never captured, and no slider manufactures it honestly. The contrast lesson walks the fork.

Why do my photos look sharp on the camera screen but blurry on my computer?

The camera's screen is a tiny, downscaled preview, and downscaling hides any blur finer than the shrink, so a missed focus plane reads sharp until the file meets a real monitor. Zoom to 100% and ask where the sharpest point sits: if it is the ear and not the eye, the plane missed at capture, and no sharpening tool moves it afterward. Focus teaches plane discipline.

Why is the whole photo slightly soft even though I focused right?

If focus landed and the frame is still soft everywhere, something degraded the exposure itself: a hand-held shutter too slow for the focal length, subject motion outrunning it, an aperture stopped down into diffraction, or a lens at its softest wide open. Why can't I get a blurry background like the pros?

Background blur is geometry, not expensive glass. Four levers control it: a wider aperture, a closer subject, a longer focal length, and the one most photographers skip, the distance between subject and background. Pulling the subject a few steps away from the wall often buys more visible softness than a stop of aperture, and it costs nothing. Depth of field explains all four.

Why is my sky always blown out and white?

A white sky means the scene's brightness span outran the sensor's, and the sky is the part that went over the top. Expose to protect it (keep the sky, lift the shadows later) or bracket when the scene beats one exposure. Highlight recovery pulls back a sky the file still holds; a fully clipped one returns flat grey, not cloud. Dynamic range teaches the fit.

Why are my night and low-light photos so grainy?

Grain in low light is a light shortage: the sensor recorded too little, and the shortfall surfaces as noise. Feed it more at capture: a wider aperture, a slower shutter on support, a generous exposure instead of a rescue-lift in post. Then tell the two textures apart: luminance grit can pass as film; color-blotch chroma noise is always damage, and it goes first. Noise and grain covers both.

Why does my subject blend into the background?

The subject and its background are sharing too many properties: tone, hue, focus, outline. Separation runs on four channels: lighter or darker than the ground, a distinct hue, sharp against soft, a clean uncontested background. The reflex fix, a wider aperture, is one channel and the most expensive; a step sideways that swaps the background is free and often stronger. Subject separation teaches the audit.

Why do my photos feel cluttered even though the subject is sharp?

Clutter is attention theft, elements that pull a share of the eye and pay nothing back: a bright corner, a half-object at a border, a pole meeting a head, one loud red patch. Sharpness settles which plane is crisp, not where the eye goes. Audit the whole rectangle before the shutter: squint for bright thieves, patrol the edges, trace the outline for merges. Why do my colors look off: too warm or too cool?

A frame that reads uniformly too warm or too cool has its neutral anchor set wrong. White balance declares which recorded color counts as colorless, and every hue in the frame is read against that anchor. Correct it globally: an eyedropper on something genuinely neutral, or the temperature axis directly; shooting RAW keeps the decision revisable. White balance covers both axes, including the tint axis most photographers forget.

Why won't my color cast go away: white balance doesn't fix it?

A tint that survives white balance is a color cast, and it survives because it is partial: green clinging to skin, warmth breathed off a red wall, blue living only in the shadows. A global slider moves every pixel identically; it cannot fix an error only some pixels have. Match the correction to the address: a hue band, a tonal range, a mask. Color cast shows how.

Why do my edits look fake and overcooked?

Overcooked means the processing reads before the photograph: neon foliage, gritty clarity, halos along contrasty edges, an even HDR glow. The cause is moves without a nameable purpose: often rescue attempts on a capture that needed different light, not more sliders. Toggle against the original, walk away and return cold, and zero any move that cannot say what it is for. Edit discipline is the method.

Why do my edits stop improving, or make the photo worse?

The edit passed its peak. Every edit draws the same curve: steep gains from the first structural moves, a flattening tail where each slider buys less, then a decline where the same moves start dismantling the frame. When versions stop improving, the file is near its ceiling; the answer is finding the last good move, not making a stronger one. Diminishing returns maps the curve.

My photos are technically fine but boring: why does nothing stand out?

Technically fine but boring is a concept gap: the frame is a well-executed noun (a mountain, a street, a face) with no claim, no answer to what it is about. Editing cannot install one; a moody grade over a claimless frame is decoration on an empty room. Name one sentence before the shutter (a claim, not a subject) and shoot that.
