Bokeh is not blur. Blur is the amount of defocus (how far the background falls out of focus) and that quantity belongs to depth of field. Bokeh is the quality of the defocus: the character of what the out-of-focus areas become. Two lenses can throw the same background out of focus by exactly the same amount and hand back two different pictures: one dissolving it into a smooth wash of tone, the other chopping it into doubled edges and hard-rimmed blobs. Same blur, opposite bokeh.
That makes bokeh the one quality in this curriculum that is mostly bought, not made: it lives in the optical design of the lens and the aperture you open it to, more than in any decision made in the moment. Mostly, not entirely. The lens sets the vocabulary; you still write the sentence. Knowing what character a given lens renders, choosing the background that lets that character sing or hides its flaws, and placing the subject so the out-of-focus area becomes a deliberate surface (a graded field of tone, a bloom of highlights), instead of a smeared copy of whatever clutter stood back there: that part is authorship, and it costs nothing. Focus decides which plane is sharp. Bokeh is what happens to every plane you chose to leave behind, and those planes are half the frame.

A 6 has blur; an 8 has bokeh. In the 6, the aperture opened, the background went soft, the subject reads, and that is the whole story. The out-of-focus area is a passive smear of whatever happened to be there: a bright hotspot still glowing in a corner, a hedge flattened into one green smudge, a string of streetlights drawn as hard-edged polygons because the lens was stopped down and its aperture blades printed their shape into every highlight. Or the rendering is actively nervous: the doubled-outline look an over-corrected lens gives out-of-focus branches, every twig re-drawn as two bright lines fighting for the eye. Blurred-but-unmanaged is also the default signature of a phone's portrait mode and of a kit lens wide open: blur present, character generic or distracting, and the frame quietly announcing that nobody looked past the subject.
An 8 treats the out-of-focus area as a chosen surface. The falloff is graded (the near background softer than the subject, the far background softer still) so the space recedes instead of standing behind the subject like a card. Specular highlights bloom into clean, rounded orbs, not clipped polygons. Nothing back there competes: no survivor hotspot, no doubled edge nagging from a border. And the background's tone and color are doing quiet work: a wash of shade behind a lit face, a field of warm evening orbs behind a cooler subject. The judge's tell is where the eye goes when it leaves the subject. In a 6 it snags on something the blur failed to kill; in an 8 it slides across a surface that was composed, not merely defocused. The distance between snag and slide is the distance between an aperture setting and a decision about half the frame.

Look past the subject before the shutter: at the surface the background is about to become. The out-of-focus area is half the frame, and it usually arrives by accident, because almost nobody reads it in advance. Three reads.
Hunt the survivor. A specular highlight or a bright patch (a gap of white sky through leaves, sun on chrome, a distant window) will not be killed by defocus. Defocus spreads a point's light across a disc: diluted, not extinguished. A source that is orders of magnitude brighter than the scene stays brighter than everything around it even after the spreading: it doesn't vanish, it grows, into a glowing orb that out-shouts the subject. Move until it leaves the frame or hides behind the subject.
Read the texture for nervousness. Fine, high-contrast detail (bare branches, chain-link, dappled light through leaves) is where a lens's character shows most brutally. A smooth lens turns it to cream; a nervous one turns it into jittery doubled edges. If your lens is known to render busy, choose a plainer background or pull the subject farther from it.
Check the highlight shape. Wide open, orbs near the corners squash into cat's-eye lemons: the lens barrel clips the oblique light cone, and the clipped pupil prints as a lemon instead of a circle. If round orbs matter to the picture, keep them near the center of the frame, or stop down a touch: a smaller aperture clears the barrel's clipping and the corners round back out. And look inside the orbs themselves. Many modern lenses built around molded aspherical elements draw faint concentric rings inside each disc: onion-ring bokeh, a fixed signature of the glass that no aperture change removes. There is no field fix; there is only knowing whether your lens has it, and deciding, in front of a wall of dense point-lights, whether that texture is a price the picture can pay.

Three levers set how much blur there is, and the subject-separation lesson already handed them over: a wider aperture, a longer focal length, and, the one people forget, more distance between subject and background. Pulling the subject a few steps off the wall often melts a background that f/2.8 alone left legible, and a longer lens magnifies whatever blur exists so its character fills more of the frame. Those three answer how much. This lesson is the fourth question they raise: not how much, but how well.
Aperture is a quality dial, not just a quantity dial, and it forces a genuine trade. Wide open buys maximum melt and the roundest central orbs (the aperture is a full circle) and also maximum aberration: the softest, sometimes most nervous rendering, plus the cat's-eye squash at the edges. Stop down a third to two-thirds and the rendering calms and the corner orbs round out as the clipping eases, but now the highlights take the shape of the aperture blades: six straight blades snap to a hard hexagon, nine or eleven curved blades hold a near-circle for a stop or two. There is no free lunch. Orb roundness trades against rendering cleanliness, and which matters depends on whether the background has highlights to shape at all. The 8 is shot at the aperture that wins this frame's trade: often a hair off wide-open, not reflexively at the maximum.
Then compose the background as a surface in its own right. A field of point-lights at dusk (fairy lights, distant traffic, sun sparking on water) becomes a field of orbs, and that is the one time specular highlights are wanted: place them, and open up to where they bloom largest and roundest. A plain distant wall or a bank of shade becomes a clean tonal wash. Either is a choice; a random hedge at middle distance is not. And nail the plane first, that discipline belongs to the focus lesson, because the most beautiful bokeh ever rendered behind a soft eye is still a missed frame.

The hard truth first, because this is where money and hours get wasted: bokeh is the least fakeable quality in this curriculum. It is an optical event, and post has no optics.
You can paint a Gaussian or "lens blur" over a background, or let an AI depth map do it (the phone portrait-mode move) and a trained eye finds it by three tells. Real defocus deepens continuously with distance; a mask-based blur is one flat amount behind a hard cutout, so the background reads as a pasted card, not receding space. The subject's outline betrays the mask: hair, fur, the gap between an arm and a body, glass, any fine or translucent edge either haloes or gets amputated. And real out-of-focus highlights grow into discs far larger than the points that made them; a synthetic blur only smears the pixels already there, so the orbs never bloom: the one thing that makes bokeh beautiful is the one thing the fake cannot manufacture.
What post can honestly do is groom a rendering that already exists. Heal or burn down the surviving specular the capture left glowing in an already-soft background, though in documentary and nature-competition work the heal is off the table (that glow is scene light, not a lens fault), and only the burn touches it there. Defringe the green-and-magenta color smear some fast lenses paint on out-of-focus edges: longitudinal chromatic aberration; the defringe slider targets exactly this. Nudge a bright background patch a step darker so it stops bidding for the eye. These are cleanups on a real optical event, not the manufacture of one.
When the background is sharp-ish clutter and the picture wanted cream, the frame is capture-limited by definition: the same fake-blur wall the subject-separation lesson warns about, seen up close. But capture-limited is not gear-limited, and the strongest lever here costs nothing: subject-to-background distance. Before pricing a faster lens, walk the subject a few steps away from what stands behind them: every step widens the gap between the plane in focus and the planes left behind, and clutter that read as legible up close melts on its own from farther off. A longer lens or a wider aperture helps; distance is free, and it is the first climb for anyone shooting a kit lens. Bokeh is won at the shutter, and the cheapest way to win it is with feet.

- Advanced: treats bokeh as authorship. Knows each lens's signature and picks the tool for the rendering the picture wants, composes fields of specular orbs on purpose, tunes character, not just depth, by thirds of a stop, and, the real mark, sometimes chooses more depth of field over prettier blur, because a background that deserves to be read is worth more than one that merely melts.

Pick one subject you can place (a person, a mug, a flower on a stem) and one lens. Find a spot with three background zones you can shoot in turn: a plain distant wall or bank of shade; a bank of point-lights (fairy lights, distant traffic at dusk, sun on water: anything specular; if nothing is handy, a single string of lights across a dark room works perfectly, or streetlights seen through a window at dusk); and a patch of fine busy detail (bare branches, a chain-link fence, dappled leaves). Keep the subject and its distance from you fixed; let the background and the aperture be the only things that change.
Set the camera to aperture priority so it handles the shutter while you drive only the aperture. Shoot six frames: the plain wall wide-open, the point-lights wide-open, the busy detail wide-open, then click the aperture up two to three third-stops and repeat all three. Same subject, same framing, same plane. This is the one-variable discipline of the other lessons, run along the axis of bokeh quality instead of amount.
Import all six and look only at the out-of-focus area. Against the point-lights, watch the orbs: round wide-open? Do they square off or stay round stopped down? Do the corner orbs squash into lemons wide-open and round out as you close? And look inside the biggest discs for concentric rings: now you know whether your lens draws onion rings, and no review had to tell you. Against the busy detail, watch for the nervous doubled edges: does stopping down calm them, or was your lens smooth to begin with? Against the plain wall, notice there was never a bokeh problem at all, which is its own lesson: the character only matters when the background has highlights or texture to test it. The stopped-down orbs versus the wide-open melt is the exact trade you will make for real, and now you have felt it on your own glass.
Then close the loop. You most likely reached this page from a critique that named subject separation as your bottleneck: bokeh is one lever inside it, the quality of its depth channel. Send your single strongest frame back for a fresh critique, and hold the prediction honestly: a cleaner out-of-focus area helps most when it removed something that was competing with your subject (a survivor highlight killed, a nervous background quieted) because that is what strengthens separation, and separation is what the critique reads. The test is not whether creamy blur got rewarded for its own sake; it is whether the frame now separates cleanly enough that the critique names a different limit, with the FinalFrame Score free to follow. If separation is named again, that is information, not indictment, look before you argue: the culprit is usually a survivor highlight the blur never killed, or a frame that leaned on depth alone when it needed tone or color too, and both send you one lesson back to subject separation with a sharper eye. And if the critique instead calls the subject itself soft, that is the other neighbor talking: beautiful bokeh cannot rescue a missed plane, and focus is the lesson waiting for you next.
