How to photograph falling snow
Falling-snow shots fail invisible: the snow that filled the air is nowhere in the frame, or it's a faint grey speckle that reads as sensor dirt. The metering half is a lesson of its own and unchanged here: snow fools the meter toward grey and wants positive compensation, and the exposure lesson teaches that logic in full. What is specific to falling snow is making the fall read, and it comes down to two levers. Shutter speed decides whether snow renders as frozen flakes or as streaks: a fast shutter (around 1/250 and up) freezes each flake into a crisp dot, a slow one (around 1/30 and below) draws it into a falling streak, and the ugly middle smears them into an indistinct blur that reads as neither (the same shutter-draws-motion physics the long-exposure lesson works at the far end). And snow only reads against something darker than itself: a dark building, evergreens, a shaded wall; against a bright grey sky the flakes vanish, and a low front or side light makes each one catch and glow.
Safety
Falling snow means wet, cold gear. The cold drains batteries fast: keep spares in a warm inner pocket and swap them as they fade, not when they quit. Snow landing on a warm lens melts to water, so a hood and an occasional wipe keep the front element clear while a bag or rain cover keeps the body dry. The real hazard is the walk back inside: a cold camera meeting warm air condenses moisture inside itself, so let it acclimatize sealed in its bag before opening (the fog that forms on the inner glass outlasts the whole shoot).

- Shutter (the decision)
- Fast, around 1/250 and up, freezes each flake into a sharp dot; slow (around 1/30 and below, braced) stretches it into a falling streak; the in-between smears into mush that reads as neither. Choose the look first, then set the shutter to it.
- Exposure
- Snow fools the meter toward grey: add positive compensation and watch the right edge of the histogram; the metering logic lives in the exposure lesson. Snow should read bright, not dim.
- Background
- Aim at something darker than the snow: a dark facade, evergreens, a shaded wall. Flakes disappear against a bright grey sky and separate against dark.
- Light on the flakes
- Front or side light makes each flake catch and glow; flat light lets them recede. Backlight is the other classic: flakes crossing a streetlamp beam against a dark background, shot from the shadow side, glow brighter than anything else in the frame. Either way, a dark backdrop is where falling snow reads best.
- Aperture & ISO
- Set them to reach the shutter you chose: a streak look may want a smaller aperture in daylight; a freeze look in dim snow-light may cost ISO. The shutter leads; these follow.
In the field
- Decide the look first, frozen flakes or falling streaks, because the shutter follows from it, not the other way around.
- Find a dark backdrop for the snow to read against; move until the flakes separate from what's behind them.
- Add positive exposure compensation and confirm on the histogram: bright, not grey.
- Put a low, raking light across the fall if you can (front or side, never flat) so each flake catches it.
- Keep shooting as the fall thickens and thins; density changes the look shot to shot.
When it fails
- The snow simply isn't there
- A bright background swallowed it and the shutter froze it into invisible specks. Put a dark subject behind the fall (evergreens, a wall, a building) so the flakes separate, and choose a shutter that matches the look: streaks against dark read as snow; tiny frozen dots against grey do not.
- Flakes smeared to grey mush
- The shutter landed in the ugly middle: too slow to freeze, too fast to streak cleanly. Commit to one end: fast (around 1/250 and up) for crisp flakes, or slow (around 1/30 and under, braced) for deliberate streaks (the same shutter-draws-motion choice the long-exposure lesson makes at the far end).
- A dim, grey, joyless frame
- The meter read all that white as middle grey and underexposed the scene. Snow wants positive compensation: dial in more exposure until the histogram sits right of center without clipping. Bright snow reads as snow; grey snow reads as gloom.
