What it means
Of the four numbers a critique returns, three of them look at where the frame stands: the Artistic sub-score, the Technical sub-score, and the FinalFrame Score that blends them by your lane. One looks forward. Your Potential score is the highest realistic score this exact file could reach through post-processing alone, and the last word is the whole discipline: alone. Potential deliberately counts no reshoot. It reads the headroom in the pixels the sensor already recorded, not the better frame the next shutter press might capture.
Be clear about what kind of number this is. Potential is the model's estimate, judged from the file in front of it: how much of the frame's quality the current rendering leaves unclaimed. It is an informed read, not a measurement, but it is bound by two rules that make it usable. It never sits below your sub-scores: a ceiling below the floor would be a contradiction in terms, and the critique holds that line. And when the capture itself set the wall (a missed plane, a truly blown highlight), the Potential is pinned within a few tenths of your higher sub-score, because editing cannot manufacture what the file never held.
Which leads to the part photographers miss: the number is meaningless read alone. A Potential of 8.3 tells you nothing until you set it beside where the frame is now. The score's entire job is to be read as a GAP, and the critique is specific about which two numbers make it: the Potential minus the HIGHER of your two sub-scores, Artistic impact or Technical merit, whichever came back larger. Not the FinalFrame Score. That one is a lane-weighted blend of the same two sub-scores, so it always sits at or below the higher of them, and subtracting it would report more headroom than the critique is claiming. Why it matters
The gap is a map of where the remaining quality actually lives, and photographers routinely spend hours on the side of the map that is already empty.
Read three files. A frame whose higher sub-score is 6.8, carrying a Potential of 8.3, has a point and a half of headroom sitting unspent in the file, and editing is the lever that reaches it. That is a wide gap, and a wide gap is an instruction to INVEST: this is exactly the frame the worth-it verdict flags as deserving the hour (/learn/worth-it). Now a frame whose higher sub-score is 7.7, with a Potential of 7.8: a tenth of a point of headroom, a good frame sitting essentially at its edit ceiling. More editing buys nothing a viewer will notice; the honest move is to bank it and shoot the next thing. And the hard one: a frame whose higher sub-score is 5.4, with a Potential of 5.6. The reason this is worth internalizing is that effort and payoff are not the same axis. The wide-gap 6.8 and the pinned 5.4 both feel like unfinished frames that want more work, but one rewards editing and the other punishes it. How to read it
Reading the gap takes two glances, always in the same order.
First glance: the SIZE of the gap. Subtract your higher sub-score from the Potential, which is the same subtraction the critique itself runs. A wide gap (a point or more, the 6.8-to-8.3 kind) says the file is holding quality the current rendering isn't showing; the editing is worth doing. A narrow gap, a few tenths, says the frame is near its ceiling and the sliders are almost out of room. You do not have to do the arithmetic to reach the verdict: on a first-version critique the Editing headroom row already states it in words, and the Potential itself sits in that row's tooltip. Size alone answers the first question: is there editing headroom here at all?
Second glance: the HEIGHT the ceiling sits at, which only matters once the gap is narrow. A narrow gap high up, a Potential of 8-plus, is a finished, strong frame; the stop-editing and worth-it verdicts will be saying the same thing, and they are complimenting the work (/learn/stop-editing). A narrow gap sitting LOW, a Potential in the 5s or low 6s, is a different animal: the ceiling is not just close, it is low, and a low, close ceiling is the fingerprint of a capture limitation: a missed plane, a blown highlight, a moment that didn't land (/learn/capture-limited). The critique prints the same two words over both of them, At its ceiling, because that row reports the DISTANCE and not the altitude. The height is the read you add, and it is the one that decides whether you are banking a good frame or routing a weak one to the next shoot. A Potential pinned near a weak sub-score is the product's quietest, most useful sentence: the remaining quality is not at your desk.
The read to unlearn is treating a low Potential as an insult. It is not a grade on the photograph: it is a direction. High-and-wide means edit. High-and-narrow means stop. Low-and-narrow means the headroom moved to the next capture. You are reading a signpost, not a scoreboard.
The move it drives
The move is a triage decision, and it is the entire reason the number exists: before the first slider, the Potential gap says whether this frame earns editing time or shutter time.
Wide gap: commit. The file has the headroom, so open the editor and spend the session, but spend it AIMED: the gap says how much is there, and the one named bottleneck on the same critique says where it is. Potential says an A− is reachable; the bottleneck says the tonal hierarchy is what stands between the frame and it. Read them as a pair (the gap is the budget, the bottleneck is the address) and work the bottleneck's own lesson rather than pushing every slider hopefully.
Narrow gap, strong score: stop, and bank it. The frame is at its ceiling and it is good; the discipline is not talking yourself into another hour the number has already called empty. Save the state and move the attention to the next capture, where the marginal return is real. This is where Potential hands off to the stop-editing and diminishing-returns verdicts: same instruction, three surfaces (/learn/diminishing-returns).
Narrow gap, weak score: do NOT open the editor. This is the counter-intuitive move and the most valuable one: the frame looks unfinished, every instinct says edit it up, and the Potential is saying flatly that the editor is the wrong room. The headroom is in the capture, so the effort routes to a reshoot, and the same critique that pinned the Potential also named which capture lever missed. Invest there, next time, not here, now.
Common misreadings
One: reading it as where the frame IS instead of where it could GET. A Potential of 8.3 is not an A− in hand; it is an A− that editing could reach FROM here, and reaching it is the work the gap represents. Confusing the ceiling with the current position is how a number gets celebrated before it is earned: the frame still sits at its FinalFrame Score until the editing actually happens. The distance between the two numbers is the message; the Potential alone is just the top of the ladder, not a rung anyone is standing on.
Two: reading a low Potential as a bad grade. A narrow gap at a strong score is the best result on the page: near the ceiling AND already good. A low Potential only carries hard news when it sits pinned to a weak sub-score, and even then it is not a verdict on ability: it is a routing instruction pointing at the capture. The number that looks like a failure is usually an honest signpost.
Three: expecting the number to include reshoot headroom. It does not, by design. Potential measures what EDITING can reach from the file that exists; re-capture is deliberately excluded. That exclusion is the whole reason a capture-limited frame gets a Potential within a few tenths of its higher sub-score, not because the picture can't be improved, but because it can't be improved AT THE DESK. The reshoot path is real and often the right one, but the system points there through a LOW Potential plus the critique's prose, never by inflating the number with quality a second shoot might add. Wait for Potential to promise the better frame not yet taken, and the wait never ends.
Four: confusing the Potential score with the editing ceiling itself. They are the number and the wall it reports. The editing ceiling is the concept (what the capture physically allows post-processing to reach) and its lesson is about what SETS that height (/learn/editing-ceiling). Potential is that height printed onto the critique as a forward-looking score, read as a gap. Same wall, two jobs: one explains why the ceiling is where it is, the other hands over the number and the decision it drives.

- Advanced: estimates the ceiling before the first slider, deciding whether a frame earns editing time or shutter time at V1 rather than an hour in; treats a low, close Potential as an early, clean reshoot decision instead of a disappointment, and spends editing effort only where the gap proves it will pay.
Try it on your work
Nothing gets shot here: the exercise is a sorting pass over critiques you already own, and its output is a decision about where the next hours go. With only one critique so far, start with it; the read works on a single frame and only sharpens as the pile grows, so begin the log now.
Pull up your recent critiques and, for each, write four things: the higher of your two sub-scores, the Potential score (on a first-version critique, hover the Editing headroom row and the tooltip carries the number), the gap between them, and the one named bottleneck. Then sort every frame into one of three piles. WIDE gap, a point or more of headroom, goes to the invest pile: the file has quality the rendering isn't showing. NARROW gap sitting HIGH (a Potential above 8, a few tenths over your higher sub-score) goes to the done pile: near the ceiling and already strong, hands off. NARROW gap sitting LOW, a Potential pinned in the 5s or low 6s, goes to the reshoot pile: the wall was set at capture, and editing it further is the wrong room.
That sort alone is the lesson: most photographers find their invest pile smaller than they assumed and their done pile larger, which is to say the hours have been going to frames the number already closed. But finish with one action: take the strongest frame in the invest pile, open the lesson for its named bottleneck, do the editing it prescribes, and upload the result as a new version.
Then read the receipt. The bottleneck that sent you to that frame was a real limit, so the prediction is testable: your higher sub-score should climb toward the Potential the gap promised, and the named bottleneck should recede and hand off to a new one. The critique does that subtraction for you on the new version. From the second version on it stops printing the ceiling as a number and prints the movement instead, counting how far your higher sub-score has come since the first version whenever it has come any distance at all. If it climbs, you have watched the gap turn into points, and the number has earned its trust for the next time it says a file is worth the hour. If the score barely moves, the frame has quietly reclassified itself: its real wall was never in the editing, and it belongs in the reshoot pile already built, with the capture lever the critique named waiting to be shot properly. Both outcomes are the same tool sharpening: the gap was always a decision about where the quality lives, and an entire shoot just got sorted by it.
