Glossário de conceitos

Concept

The underlying idea or story the image communicates.

Composition

How elements are arranged within the frame to guide the viewer's eye.

Leading Lines

Lines in the scene that guide the viewer's eye toward the subject.

Eye Flow

The natural path the viewer's eye follows through the image.

Negative Space

Empty areas in the frame that give the subject room to breathe.

Visual Weight

How much attention an element commands relative to others in the frame.

Subject Separation

How clearly the subject stands apart from its surroundings.

Clutter

Distracting elements that compete with the subject for attention.

Timing

Whether the image captures the right instant, technically or emotionally.

Emotion

The feeling a photograph transmits to a stranger: carried by expression, gesture, and light coinciding, not by a subject merely displaying it.

Posing

Managing what a body says to the camera: building a gesture line the subject can hold, so the frame just past the pose catches them having forgotten the lens.

Exposure

Whether the image's overall brightness serves the subject and mood.

Tonal Hierarchy

How brightness contrast directs the viewer's eye to the subject.

Dynamic Range

The span from darkest shadow detail to brightest highlight detail in the image.

Long Exposure

The shutter held open long enough that motion renders as accumulated form (silked water, cloud streaks, light trails, thinned crowds) anchored by still elements kept tack-sharp. In our scoring, a chosen duration reads as intent; an arbitrary smear or a shaken anchor surfaces as a sharpness flaw.

Midtones

The middle brightness range between shadows and highlights: where most image detail lives.

Highlight Recovery

Restoring detail in bright areas that appear washed out or pure white.

Dodge & Burn

Selectively brightening (dodge) or darkening (burn) areas to guide the viewer's eye.

Light quality

The size and direction of the light source: what the light does to the subject, not just whether there is enough of it.

Flash

A second light source with its own exposure: judged by the ratio it keeps with the ambient, and by whether the frame reads as lit or as flashed.

Histogram

The camera's bar chart of tonal population: how many pixels sit at each brightness from black to white.

Contrast

The global tonal spread of the delivered photograph, how far apart its darkest and brightest tones sit, read as a mood register, not a more-is-better axis.

Zone System

Ansel Adams' scale for naming tones, one stop apart from Zone 0 (solid black) through Zone V (the middle gray a light meter renders) to Zone X (paper white). When a critique asks for Zone III-IV separation, it wants the darkest shadows that still show texture (III) to hold a visible step apart from the fuller shadows above them (IV), so a dark area keeps its form instead of merging into one flat block.

Focus

Whether focus landed on the intended subject.

Sharpness

Whether the in-focus plane is truly crisp (camera shake, slow shutter, diffraction, lens softness, over-sharpening).

Capture Ceiling

The one capture flaw that caps the frame: no edit reaches it.

Depth of Field

How much of the scene is in focus from front to back.

Bokeh

The quality and character of out-of-focus areas, not just the amount of blur.

Noise & Grain

Noise is a flaw from high ISO; grain is an intentional aesthetic choice.

Color

Whether the image's colors serve its mood and feel intentional.

White Balance

The color temperature setting that determines whether the image looks warm, cool, or neutral.

Color Cast

An unintended color tint across the image, where tones you know are neutral no longer read neutral.

Color Grading

Intentional color shifts applied in post-processing to set mood or style.

Color theory

The color wheel as a working tool: how hues behave by their distance apart, and the named relationships (complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary).

Saturation vs Vibrance

Two intensity controls that do different jobs: saturation multiplies every hue equally; a vibrance-class lift raises muted hues more than vivid ones and shelters the skin band.

Curation

Choosing which frames earn the slots: the judgment that only exists in the plural, where a frame competes against its neighbors instead of a standard.

Competition entry

Aiming a set at one contest: the rulebook that decides eligibility, the jury that decides what wins, and the condition they will see it in.

Three-pass read

A way to read a photograph in three passes: the whole frame first, then four axes against the whole, then one weakness ranked above the rest.

Edit Discipline

Whether post-processing enhances the image without becoming the image.

Masking

Applying edits to specific areas of the image rather than the whole frame.

Crop

Reshaping the delivered rectangle at the desk: its orientation, aspect ratio, and how close the frame stands to the subject.

Tone curve

The graph mapping every input brightness to an output brightness: deciding where in the tonal range contrast is spent.
