Focus and sharpness get taught as synonyms, and that confusion is the most expensive one an improving photographer carries. They are different questions. Focus is a question of PLANE: a lens renders exactly one distance at its crispest (a thin slice through the scene) and the question is whether that slice landed on the tone that carries the picture, which for almost any living subject is the near eye. Sharpness is a question of DEGREE on whatever plane you happened to hit.
Which is why a frame can be flawlessly sharp on the wrong plane (a tack-sharp ear, a crisp background wall, a perfectly rendered nose while the eyes go soft) and be beyond saving. That is not a sharpness problem an editor can work on; it is a focus failure, and it is fatal in a way mild softness never is. The physics underneath is a continuum: blur grows smoothly with distance from the plane, and depth of field is only the band where that blur stays too small to notice. But the judgment sitting on top of the physics is binary: the sharpest slice either sits on the tone that carries the picture or it does not. There is no partial credit, and nothing made afterward can move the slice. Precision, at the moment of capture, is the entire game.

At web size, a 6 passes. Focus landed somewhere on the subject's mass, the face reads sharp on a phone, and depth of field is quietly covering a small miss. Downscaling is generous that way: shrink the file and any blur finer than the shrink vanishes with it. Punch to 100% and the truth surfaces: the plane sits a touch off the eye, or the aperture's depth is doing the job the focus point should have done. The frame is forgiven, not nailed.
An 8 is surgical. The critical plane sits exactly on the tone that carries the image: the NEAR eye in a turned-face portrait (not the far eye, not the brow), the catchlight eye in wildlife, the one critical detail in macro. And the fall-off is intentional: the sharp slice and the subject are the same thing, so the blur around it reads as design rather than luck. The judge's tell is a single question at full magnification: is the sharpest pixel exactly where the picture lives? On a 6 it is NEAR there. On an 8 it IS there. Nothing about that gap is equipment. Putting the plane on the eye is the cheapest thing in photography to get right in theory and the most commonly missed in practice, which is exactly why eye-dependent genres weight it so heavily, and why a body of work that nails it every time announces a photographer who verifies instead of hopes.

Diagnose focus at capture and in the two seconds after, while a reshoot still costs nothing.
Name the carry-tone before the frame: the single point that must be sharp, and for a turned face that is always the near eye. Put the active AF point on it: move the point, not the camera. Focus-and-recompose at shallow depth of field is a built-in miss with a precise mechanism: the focus plane stays at the focused distance along the lens's new axis, while the eye's distance along that axis shrinks by the cosine of your swing, so the plane lands behind the eye, a small systematic back-focus that grows with the angle, and wide open it is routinely larger than the entire in-focus slice.
Then review like a skeptic. Fit-to-screen sharpness is a comfortable lie at f/1.8: punch in to 100% on the carry-tone itself. And be honest about what even 100% can settle: judge sharpness on fine texture (eyelashes, iris fibres, feather barbs, fabric weave), never on shine. A smooth, glossy surface throws crisp-edged specular highlights whether the plane is nailed or missed, so a shiny subject can read identically "sharp" in the keeper and the miss, doubly so once both are shrunk to web size. If the surface at the focus point offers no texture, verify on the nearest detail that does.
Know your budget. Wide open on a tight headshot the in-focus slice is on the order of a centimetre (sometimes less at very close range) and it thins as you move in. A breath of subject sway, or your own lean between focusing and firing, walks the slice off the eye. So when you review, never ask "is it sharp?" Ask "WHERE is it sharpest?" If the answer is not the carry-tone, it is a focus miss, no matter how crisp the wrong plane looks.

This is where focus is won, so spend the attention here. Use single-point AF or eye-detect placed deliberately on the carry-tone, and when eye-AF locks, verify which eye it grabbed. Detection is a convenience, not a contract: on a turned face it will happily take the far eye, and that miss is yours to catch. Match the AF mode to the motion: single-shot for genuinely static subjects, continuous servo for anything that moves, including a portrait subject rocking gently on their feet at f/2, which at that depth is motion whether it looks like it or not.
Buy margin when the picture can afford it. Depth of field scales with the f-number: stopping down from f/1.4 to f/2.8 roughly doubles the in-focus slice. It is not free (the background blur discs shrink in the same proportion), but with real distance between subject and background the separation usually survives, and many an 8 is shot a stop or two down from wide open precisely to make the plane forgiving. The margin-buying has a far wall, though: past the middle apertures, diffraction begins softening the whole frame, the plane you nailed included, visibly at 100% by around f/16 on most modern sensors, earlier on very high-resolution ones. Depth is bought in the middle of the aperture ring, not at its end.
When the scene is deep and there is no single eye to hit, most landscape and architecture work, focus for the whole depth instead. Focus at the hyperfocal distance and acceptable sharpness runs from half that distance to infinity. Remember what "acceptable" means there: it is defined against an assumed print size, and infinity sits at the very edge of it, so when the far detail IS the picture, focus further out and give infinity the real sharpness. And when no single plane can cover near-to-far at all, focus-stack a near-to-far series and blend.
Stabilise whatever remains. Back-button focus separates focusing from firing; a faster shutter kills your own sway; a tripod with magnified live view is how macro focus is actually set. Then take the insurance frames: on a critical shallow-depth portrait, fire three to five and keep the nailed one. Focus is the one variable where a short burst is discipline, not spray-and-pray.

The clause comes first, because this lesson inverts: post mostly cannot rescue focus. A missed plane is unrecoverable: if the slice landed on the ear and the eye is soft, no sharpening tool creates detail the sensor never recorded; it only raises edge contrast on the ear you never wanted sharp. AI deconvolution sharpeners can claw back a hair of overall softness or very mild camera shake, but they cannot move the focal plane. Back-focus, front-focus, and wrong-eye are reshoots, full stop. A frame like that is capture-limited, and the honest fix costs nothing and cannot be bought in software: the plane, next time.
One diagnostic before the reshoot: if the identical miss repeats (the plane a consistent touch behind or in front of the eye, frame after frame, even with careful aim), suspect calibration, not hands. Phase-detect AF on DSLRs can back- or front-focus systematically with a particular lens; AF micro-adjustment exists for exactly that fault, and on-sensor mirrorless AF has largely retired it. One miss is technique. The same miss every time is equipment.
The narrow salvage, and its limits:
(1) a small miss on a web-destined image may survive the downscale plus output sharpening, never at 100%, never in print;
(2) if the plane landed on a defensible alternative, a tack-sharp hand instead of the soft face, the honest move is sometimes to re-read the picture, crop to what is sharp, and commit to a different, valid photograph;
(3) a shallow near-miss can occasionally be leaned into as deliberate softness, but that rescues a concept, not the focus.
When to reshoot, named plainly: an eye-dependent frame with a soft eye, or any plane-miss headed for print or competition. If the carry-tone is not sharp and the frame cannot be re-read into another subject, stop editing and shoot it again. That is not editing failing: it is the one thing editing was never able to do.

- Strong (a committed hobbyist's working level): near-eye discipline. Eye-detect with verification, servo on motion, reviews at 100% on texture, buys depth margin when the picture allows; reliably sharp on the carry-tone in most conditions.
- Advanced: automatic under pressure. Servo tracking on erratic motion, focus-stacking for near-to-far, manual precision when AF gives up in the dark, and a per-frame judgment between stopping down for the plane and opening up for the fall-off, yet still verifies the plane every single time, because the advanced photographer assumes nothing.

Choose one subject with a clear near/far axis: a person turned 45 degrees to you, a row of bottles, a receding fence. Fix your position and your light. Shoot the SAME frame at your widest aperture (f/1.8-2.8 if you have it, otherwise as wide as the lens opens), six times, changing only where the focus point lands: the near eye, the far eye, the nose or front edge, the ear or back edge, one frame on camera-chooses wide-area, and one focus-and-recompose.
Import the six and punch to 100% on the near eye (the same spot in every frame) and judge on texture, not shine. Only the near-eye frame should be truly sharp there. Watch the focus-and-recompose frame carry the plane behind the eye exactly as the cosine predicted, watch wide-area park it wherever contrast shouted loudest, and feel how little margin wide open actually gives you. The rubric is brutal and binary: at 100%, on the carry-tone (sharp or not sharp).
Then run the experiment. Re-critique the near-eye frame: just that one. A critique named focus as your ONE bottleneck, which is why you are reading this; a plane placed on purpose is the test of whether the diagnosis still holds. If it no longer does, the next critique names a different limit, and the FinalFrame Score has room to move with it. And if focus is named again, that is information, not indictment: look at 100% before arguing with the machine (either the plane missed the near eye even when you aimed for it, or it mattered less than you feared for this subject). Both are findings, not failures. And notice what the other five frames are for: no slider turns the losers into winners. You got it at capture, or you got it never.
