Product is the genre where nothing is found and everything is built. There is no decisive moment, no fleeting light, no subject that moves, which means the frame carries a different kind of honesty: everything in it is a construction decision, and everything unconsidered shows. The first discipline is reading the surface before reaching for a light, because the surface dictates the entire strategy. Matte objects scatter light and behave the way most photography teaches: direction and shadow shape them. Glossy, metallic, and transparent objects do something else entirely: their surfaces are mirrors, and what appears "on" them is an image of whatever sits at the mirror angle to the camera. This is the single idea the whole genre's logic rests on, stated as plain optics: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, so from the camera's position, each patch of a shiny surface can only show light arriving from one specific direction, and because the surface curves, those single directions fan out across it into a range, its family of angles. Put something large and bright across that zone and the surface reads bright; put something dark there and it reads dark. Once that is seen, lighting chrome stops being mysterious. The work is not lighting the product. The work is designing the world the product reflects.
The second discipline is the hero angle. Every manufactured object was designed to be seen: someone chose its proportions, its face, where the label sits, which edge carries the identity. The hero angle is the viewpoint that presents those decisions: the form legible, the key feature forward, the label flat enough to read without distortion. Finding it is a slow rotation on the table: raise the camera, lower it, quarter-turn the object, watch when the shape suddenly resolves into itself. Most tabletop products present from slightly above their own eye level; a bottle often wants the camera nearer its shoulder than its cap. The exact position is the object's to declare, and the frames that skip this search read immediately as a thing photographed from wherever the tripod happened to stand.
The third discipline is knowing which genre the frame is actually making. Still-life is the artistic cousin: light as mood, arrangement as story, objects standing for something beyond themselves, shadows allowed to swallow half the composition if the feeling asks for it. Product serves the object commercially: clean, accurate, ideal. The object must look exactly like itself on its best day: desire plus information, nothing hidden, nothing invented. If the frame becomes more interesting than the product, it has drifted into still-life wearing product's job description. Both are legitimate; a frame that hasn't decided between them serves neither.
And the background is a rendered decision, not an afterthought. A seamless sweep (white, grey, or graduated) is part of the product's presentation. A gradient background is built with light, not paint: a background light feathered across the sweep, or the natural falloff of a source placed near one end, since illumination falls off with the square of distance. The frame either commits to paper-white, commits to a deliberate gradient, or reads as a product on a slightly dirty nothing.

The build order is the craft: tripod, base ISO, manual exposure, and one light at a time. Start from black and add. Bring in the key through diffusion, and watch what it does to every surface in the frame, not just the one it was aimed at, before anything else is added. A tabletop set is the one place in photography where every variable is under control, which means every stray reflection left in the frame is a decision not yet made.
Diffusion and flags are the genre's real instruments. A scrim between the light and the product does more than soften, it becomes the source: the shape that appears in a glossy surface is the shape of the scrim, at the size the scrim is, not the bulb behind it. A larger source relative to the subject wraps further around a curved surface and stretches the specular into a long, smooth gradient, which is precisely what makes a cylinder read as round and a bottle's shoulder read as glass.
Flags do the opposite work: a black card placed at the edge of the family of angles carves a dark line into a reflective edge, and that line is what defines a chrome rim or a glass wall against a bright background. Bright shapes describe the form; dark shapes draw its edges. The light in this genre is arranged as much with black cards as with lights.
Glass gets its own commitment, because the edges of transparent objects exist only as reflections. Two textbook approaches, and the frame must pick one: bright-field (a luminous white background behind the glass, with dark flags just outside the frame reflecting into the edges so the object is drawn in dark lines on white); or dark-field: a dark background, with narrow white panels just outside the frame edges reflecting in as bright rims, the object drawn in light lines on black. Half-committed glass, lit like an opaque object and hoped for, delivers edges that appear and vanish along their own length.
Then depth, which on a tabletop is not free. Depth of field shrinks as focus distance shortens, and a product with real depth at close range will not hold sharp front-to-back at any ordinary aperture. Stopping the lens all the way down trades one failure for another: at the smallest apertures, diffraction softens the fine detail everywhere (the frame becomes evenly, slightly unsharp).
The working method is focus stacking: a middle aperture where the lens performs at its cleanest, a series of frames stepped from the nearest point of the product to the deepest, blended in post into a single file that is sharp throughout. Locked tripod, untouched set, identical exposure across the stack. This is standard commercial practice, not an exotic rescue.
Color is a contract. The buyer receives the object the frame promised, so the frame's color must be accurate, not pleasing: a gray card or color checker in the first frame of the set, raw capture, and one light temperature on the table (window daylight mixed with a tungsten desk lamp bakes in a cast that no single white-balance correction can neutralize across the frame).
And clean at capture: blower, microfiber, gloves for metal and glass. Every speck lifted from the surface before the shutter is a speck that never needs cloning; at the magnification product work is judged, dust is not a detail.

Post carries more weight in product than in almost any other genre, and legitimately so. Focus-stack blending, dust and scratch cleanup, lifting the background to true paper-white or smoothing the gradient, removing the support wire or the acrylic riser, compositing the cleanest specular from one frame with the sharpest label from another: all of it is standard, honest product work. The genre's contract is not "no assembly." The contract is accuracy: the shape, proportions, and color of the object must remain true to the physical thing. Assemble the render; never redraw the product.
Two finishing disciplines. First, whites: pull the background to clean neutral, and verify it is neutral rather than bright (a warm cast on white reads as cheap the instant it sits next to accurate work). Second, keep the ground: a product cut out to floating white with its contact shadow erased stops being a photograph and starts being clip-art. The small, soft shadow where the object meets the surface is what makes the render believable; refine it, never delete it.
And the honest truth, which in this genre is unusually strict for how forgiving the post contract looks: editing cannot redraw a reflection. A blown, shapeless specular across chrome contains no data to recover: there is no gradient inside pure white. A glossy surface that reflected the room (the window frame, the ceiling, the camera) has that map fused into the surface it sits on, and it cannot be untangled convincingly. Color captured under mixed light has no trustworthy neutral to return to. Those failures are capture-limited: the reflection map, the shape of the light, and the color ground truth are all decided on the table, and post can only assemble and refine what the set built. When the set is wrong, the fix is not a later layer: it is rebuilding the set, which, in this genre alone, costs nothing but the next hour.

Self-critique with the same lens the product uses. The FinalFrame Score is a lane-weighted blend, and the critique names ONE bottleneck, the single highest-leverage weakness in the frame, not a per-category report card. Read it as the answer to "what do I rebuild first on the table," because in this genre the table is still standing and the answer is actionable tonight.
For product frames in the 6–7 band, the bottleneck is most often reflection and light-shape control: speculars that are blown or shapeless, so the surface reads shiny instead of formed; glass or chrome edges dissolving into the background for lack of a flag; a background that is almost-white or unevenly graduated; a contact shadow that is whatever the table happened to cast. The other frequent occupant of the band is depth: focus committed to the label while the back shoulder of the object goes soft, a stack that was needed and not shot. At 8 and above, the bottlenecks shrink to finish: a dust speck surviving at full magnification, a faint warm cast on the white, a specular edge that wobbles where the diffusion wrinkled, banding in the gradient, a crop that grazes the reflection.
- Sweep the entire surface at 100% (the full loop of the object, not just the label) for dust, fingerprints, and lint.
- Find the brightest specular and ask whether it has an edge and a gradient, or is a blown blob.
- Check the nearest point and the deepest point of the product at 100%: both sharp, or the stack is incomplete.
- Sample the background where it should be neutral and read the numbers: the channels should agree.
- Shrink to a thumbnail: does the object still separate from the background, and does the hero angle still declare what the product is?
6과 8을 가르는 것
The 6 is correct, and correctness is its ceiling. Exposure holds, focus landed at the label, the product is recognizable, the background is roughly clean. But the light landed rather than being placed: the speculars sit wherever the source happened to be, so the glossy surfaces read as generically shiny instead of deliberately shaped. The glass edge comes and goes against the white. The background is nearly paper, not paper. The contact shadow is accidental. The nearest logo is sharp and the far rim is quietly soft. Nothing is wrong, exactly, and nothing is decided. The diagnostic tell: set the frame beside the brand's own catalog page. The object is identical; the render is not, and the difference is visible from across the room.
An 8 is a built render. Every reflection is a decision: the speculars have edges and gradients placed to describe the form, the dark lines that define the rims were put there by flags, the glass committed to bright-field or dark-field and its edges hold their line. The color is accurate enough to ship. The product is sharp from its nearest point to its deepest. The hero angle presents the object the way its designer meant it to be seen, the background is a rendered surface rather than a leftover, and the contact shadow grounds it in the frame. On a tabletop, nothing has an excuse to be unconsidered, and in the 8, nothing is.
So build it again, for the one thing the critique named, and take the advantage no other genre offers: the subject waits. Same object, same table, no light that fades, no moment that passes. If the bottleneck was the speculars, enlarge the source until the scrim wraps the surface and place it inside the family of angles on purpose; if it was the edges, commit the glass to bright-field or dark-field and set the flags; if it was depth, shoot the stack. If the fix is real, you'll see it on the tethered screen before the score ever moves: the next critique names a different limit, and the FinalFrame Score has room to move, because the render has stopped losing to the same undesigned reflection. And if the same bottleneck is named again, that is information, not indictment. Reflection control is learned one surface family at a time (the solution that shaped the chrome does nothing for the glass beside it, and matte plastic ignores both) so a repeated bottleneck in this genre usually names a physical gap in the setup rather than a gap in the eye: a source too small to wrap the curve, a flag that doesn't exist yet, a sweep too short to let the background fall away. Those have material fixes (a larger scrim, a sheet of black foam core, another half meter of table) which makes the repeat the most useful sentence a critique can hand this genre: it is the set's shopping list, written out.
